Batman breaks up the raid; Napier is shot in the face and falls into a vat of chemicals, emerging as the Joker. Vicki’s investigation of Bruce Wayne leads her toward Batman’s identity even as the Joker fixates on her and floods Gotham with Smylex. The confrontation ends at Gotham Cathedral. After the Joker dies, police find “Batman” on the ground — it is Knox under Bruce’s discarded cape, a getaway beat used from the shooting script but cut from the finished film. Batman later gives Gordon the Bat-Signal; Vicki leaves Knox for Bruce.
