About Us

Welcome to the Comic Collector website!

My father, Rene White who will now be referred to as “The Hoarder” (although he would prefer to be known as "The Collector"), discovered his passion for comics in the 1950s. Immigrating from war-torn Europe at the tender age of 8, The Hoarder arrived in Sydney, Australia and although he was able to converse in 4 languages, English wasn’t one of them. After commencing his education at the local school and struggling to communicate with his peers, he realised he needed to find a way to learn the language quickly in order to adapt to his new Australian life. Lo and behold it was a Phantom comic that became the catalyst to learn English and triggered his obsessive comic collecting.

Once The Hoarder received his driver’s licence, he was able to maximise time spent on his hobby. By traipsing to weekend garage sales, fetes and scouring the Trading Post for private collections or deceased estates he was able to purchase just about every comic available which encompassed a variety of genres to significantly increase his personal collection. Now of course The Hoarder loves a good story and would always ask a private seller the reason behind their decision to sell their collection to which one seller replied “My wife gave me an ultimatum either the comics or her, I must say it was a close call”.

Fast forward to the late 1970s, when I was born into a hoarder home. A mountain of comic boxes along with collectibles and artwork now cascaded throughout every room in the home, not a spare surface existed and only a small corridor was available to walk from room to room. As I grew and learnt to read I became the navigator for our weekend expeditions to various peoples homes and started to learn more and more about comics and the art of collecting.

Unable to store anymore comics in our home, The Hoarder purchased a warehouse, then another and so on, adding more and more storage facilities to house his out of control and ever growing collection. Now the mark of a true Hoarder is someone who continues to add to their wares but never sells or rids themself of anything. I can categorically concur my father is a true hoarder.

Continuing to amass his collection and with The Phantom being the jewel in his crown, close to a decade ago The Hoarder and famed artist Glenn Ford purchased Frew Publications Pty Ltd and continue to publish The Phantom Comic in Australasia.

Where are we today? Well, The Hoarder has now surpassed the ripe age of ¾ of a century and with some strong encouragement by his family, has finally agreed it’s time to catalogue and sell the ENTIRE collection…!!!

So the final chapter is about to begin, however due to the huge scale (guesstimating a possible half a million comics + other collectibles) and the speed at which The Hoarder accumulated his collection, there is much unknown. While we are somewhat aware of certain valuable acquisitions, there is an abundance of anticipation and excitement of the yet to be discovered, we would love you to join us on our journey...

Kind Regards
