Key Facts:

  • Features the 64-page official adaptation of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, story by Sam Hamm, adaptation by Denny O’Neil, art and inks by Jerry Ordway, colours by Steve Oliff.
  • One-shot.
  • Reporter Alexander Knox and photographer Vicki Vale chase the Batman story while mob boss Carl Grissom sends Jack Napier to clean out Axis Chemicals β€” a set-up to kill Napier for sleeping with Grissom’s woman Alicia. Batman breaks up the raid; Napier is shot in the face and falls into a vat of chemicals, emerging as the Joker. Vicki’s investigation of Bruce Wayne leads her toward Batman’s identity even as the Joker fixates on her and floods Gotham with Smylex. The confrontation ends at Gotham Cathedral. After the Joker dies, police find β€œBatman” on the ground β€” it is Knox under Bruce’s discarded cape, a getaway beat used from the shooting script but cut from the finished film. Batman later gives Gordon the Bat-Signal; Vicki leaves Knox for Bruce. Parade-gas timing and a mouth kiss from Vicki to Knox also differ from the released film because the comic was finished from an earlier Warner Bros. script.
  • Full colour throughout.
