Batman traces the disappearances to a magician’s wire-frame stretcher trick and the Magic Palace nightclub, where the victim is identified as June Gold, assistant to headline magician David Hamton. Suspects include Lisa Morrow, Glenn Falkenstein and Hamton himself. Kaye Daye is kidnapped and Batman is chained in a filling water tank; he breaks free and unmasks apprentice Martin Monroe as the killer. Monroe murdered June to frame Hamton and escape his shadow; Hamton had been moving the body to force Gotham’s top detectives to prove him innocent.
