Key Facts:

  • Features the full-length story “The Case of the Crimson Coffin!” by David Vern, John Calnan and Dick Giordano.
  • On a foggy night Batman tails a suspicious boat to a pier beside a deserted hotel and finds a ring of robed, masked cultists — “Carib machete assassins” — about to sacrifice a human victim. He fights them off, finds the captive drugged, and locates three more drugged victims: illegal Caribbean immigrants held in the vaults. An unnamed woman then lures him into a trap. He barely escapes; when he comes to, the entire party has vanished. Later, with Commissioner Gordon, he learns someone in Gotham is scattering vague public clues to his secret identity (“He is a well-known millionaire”). Informant “Schemer” Leo says the cultists were smuggling Caribbean natives in to train as assassins. Gordon identifies the intended sacrifice as naturalist Evans Aldrich; the identification has already leaked to the press. At Aldrich’s studio Batman again meets the woman and her cultists, who steal Aldrich’s photographs and escape. The pictures were taken on an unidentified island. Another identity clue appears on a banner towed behind a plane whose owner Batman knows. He goes to that man’s penthouse and is met by his antagonist, standing hidden in a nimbus of blinding light.
  • Story continues in Batman #299 (“The Island of Purple Mist!”), where the island cult, the Mamaloi Sorceress and the identity-clue plot are resolved.
  • First appearance of the Carib Machete Assassins, Evans Aldrich, and the unnamed female cult leader later identified as the Mamaloi Sorceress.
  • Jim Aparo cover.
  • Also exists as a British price variant.
  • Full colour throughout.
