• Continues from Batman #298. Batman meets costumed millionaire Baxter Baines, who has been planting clues to Batman’s secret identity. They briefly team up against hoods trying to force that information from Baines. Baines then admits he wants to unmask Batman and replace him if Batman ever retired or was disabled. When Baines tries to tear off the cowl, Batman unmasks him instead, dumps him in a gutter, and uses Baines’s skywriting machine to paint the counter-clue “His initials are B.B.” Baines flees to Capri. Batman tags the cultists with trace radiation at Baines’s penthouse and follows them to their island hideout. The Mamaloi Sorceress has her thug Rico dressed as Batman, bound beside Evans Aldrich, and sacrifices Rico to impress the cult. Batman rescues Aldrich, defeats the cultists and discredits the priestess. He later tells Commissioner Gordon the cult was training suicide hit-men, and that Aldrich had stumbled onto the operation.
