Key Facts:

  • Features the 47-page prestige one-shot “Batman: Batgirl” by Kelley Puckett, Matt Haley and Karl Kesel.
  • One of four interlocking-cover prestige one-shots issued to coincide with the 1997 film Batman & Robin (covers, left to right: Batman: Bane, this issue, Batman: Mr. Freeze, Batman: Poison Ivy). Cover-dated July 1997; on sale 21 May 1997. Newsstand variant exists. Set early in Barbara Gordon’s career, before The Killing Joke; official solicitation frames it as her first clash with the Joker.
  • Barbara is riding in a squad car, reading about “Batgirl” stopping Killer Moth, when she hijacks a radio call and later kicks a fleeing suspect with a car door. After the Joker hits Barbieri Candies, she tears the roof off his getaway car and finds Peter Barbieri’s home address. The factory explodes before she can warn her father. As Batgirl she reaches the house, kills a gunman with a fire poker to save Mrs Barbieri, then watches the Joker murder the couple and knock her out. She wakes locked in an amusement-park room with their son, sends the boy out a chute, and is bolted to a spinning wheel for the Joker’s knife act — he killed the Barbieris because their nougat had cherry in it. A batarang frees her; Batman arrives and is shot in the head. Batgirl grabs the Joker’s gun and laughs at him until the police take him. Later Jim Gordon talks to Barbara in bed about the job; her window reflection is Batgirl.
  • Full colour throughout.
